The calendar year of 2019 saw an increase of 4 deaths when compared to a total of 7 deaths in 2018. The mortality rate per 100,000 residents for 2019 in Utah jails reached 148, still higher than the national average (seen in figure 3). Suicide continues to dominate as the most prolific cause of death with a seven year average of 53% of total deaths. Compare that to illness as the second most common cause of death at 20%, and it becomes clear that suicide, as a preventable cause of death, still has a long way to improvement. For this very reason, a new section devoted to suicide has been added to this report for 2019. Hopefully more targeted data can be used to promote a fruitful discussion aimed at finding good and long lasting solutions to the problem.
