S.B. 205 Mortality in Utah County Jails & Prisons: 2013-20
Summary
Nineteen inmates died in Utah's county jails in calendar year 2020. This can be compared to 11 deaths in the year prior. Additionally, 36 inmates died in Utah's prison system in year 2020, an increase of 15 individuals compared to year 2019. Suicide continues to dominate as the most prolific cause of death within Utah's jail system, with an 8 year average of 51% of all deaths. This can be compared to "illness", which is the second most common cause of death at 19%, and it becomes clear that suicide, as a preventable cause of death, still has a long way to improvement. For this very reason, a new section devoted to suicide was added to this report in 2019. Hopefully more targeted data can be used to promote a fruitful discussion aimed at finding good and long lasting solutions to the problem.
